Stiffness grows faster than thickness, so the choice turns on how much caliper the carton needs at a given basis weight. The mill gets more caliper by pressing and calendering less, or with a bulkier furnish. The surface comes out rougher and strength per gram can drop slightly, and the coating carries the print.
